Festivals & Events

Yi Peng, Loy Krathong, Songkran and the annual cycle that shapes the city calendar.

Chiang Mai rewards a short list more than a packed itinerary. Temples and markets sit at the centre of most first visits, but the city also opens into neighbourhood walks, nature days, hill trips, festivals and quieter options when the weather turns.

Start with what fits your time and energy. Temples and culture and markets and shopping cover the core city experiences. For areas to wander, see neighbourhoods. For mountains, parks and trips outside the valley, use day trips and nature. For Songkran, Yi Peng and the rest of the year, go to events and festivals.

In the Old City, Wat Chiang Man is the quietest of the essential temples — Chiang Mai’s oldest, and a natural stop on a morning temple walk.

Southwest of the city, Wat Phra That Doi Kham offers hilltop views and a locally focused temple visit without the full Doi Suthep climb.

For something more active, Muay Thai training in Chiang Mai ranges from beginner-friendly classes to serious training camps.

Use the categories above to jump to the kind of day you want — city experiences, neighbourhood exploring, nature, day trips, seasonal timing or festivals — then open a guide when you need the practical detail.

Got questions?

Things to do in Chiang Mai: common questions

What are the best things to do in Chiang Mai?
Start with a short list rather than trying to see everything: one or two temples (often including Doi Suthep), an Old City walk, a major market or walking street, and one trip into the hills if you have time. The better question is what fits your energy, dates and season — temples, markets, neighbourhoods, day trips and festivals each have their own section here.
How many days do you need in Chiang Mai?
Three full days covers temples, markets and a neighbourhood wander without rushing. Five days lets you add a day trip such as Doi Inthanon or an elephant sanctuary. A week is enough to slow down, return to favourite streets and catch a walking-street evening without treating the city as a checklist.
What can you do in Chiang Mai besides temples?
Plenty. Markets and walking streets, neighbourhood exploring, cafés, food, day trips into the mountains, festivals when they fall, and quieter rainy-day options indoors. Temples are a core part of Chiang Mai, but they are not the whole trip.
What are good free things to do in Chiang Mai?
Many temples are free or ask only a small donation, neighbourhood walks cost nothing, and several markets are free to browse. Viewpoints and parks are often inexpensive too. Budget mainly for transport, food and the occasional paid attraction rather than entry fees everywhere.
What can you do in Chiang Mai when it rains?
Green-season rain is often heavy but short. Use it for museums and galleries, long café stops, covered market sections, or temple courtyards once the shower passes. Keep one flexible outdoor plan for when the sky clears in late afternoon.
