Where to start
Chiang Mai has more temples than any visitor can absorb, and the common failure mode is trying. Four well-chosen temples with a bit of context behind them will leave you understanding far more than fifteen photographed in a day.

The essential four
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep sits on the mountain above the city and is the region’s most important religious site. The naga staircase, the gold chedi and the valley view are all worth the trip. Go early.
Wat Chedi Luang in the Old City holds the ruined fifteenth-century chedi that once housed the Emerald Buddha. The scale of the remaining structure is the point — nothing else in the city gives you the same sense of what Lanna Chiang Mai was.
Wat Phra Singh is the Old City’s most visited working temple, with a beautiful wooden viharn and a steady rhythm of monastic life running alongside the visitors.

Wat Umong sits in forest at the foot of the mountain, with tunnels, a lake and a completely different, quieter atmosphere. It’s the antidote to temple fatigue.

Etiquette, briefly
Most visitors worry more than they need to. The core rules are short:
- Cover shoulders and knees.
- Remove shoes before entering a building.
- Don’t point your feet at a Buddha image; sit with feet tucked behind you.
- Women should not touch or hand things directly to monks.
- Ask before photographing people, especially monks at prayer.
- Speak quietly and keep phones silent inside.

How many temples are there in Chiang Mai?
Over 300 across the city and surrounding district, with more than 30 inside the Old City walls alone. You don't need to see them all — four or five well-chosen ones give you a genuine sense of Lanna architecture and daily temple life.
What should I wear to a temple in Chiang Mai?
Shoulders and knees covered, for everyone. Loose trousers or a long skirt and a sleeved top are the safe default. Shoes come off before you enter a building. Some major temples lend or rent cover-ups, but arriving dressed appropriately is easier and more respectful.
Is Doi Suthep worth the trip?
Yes, and it's the one temple almost every visitor should do. Go early — before 9am — to beat both the tour groups and the heat. The view over the valley on a clear cool-season morning is the reason to time it well.
How do I get to Doi Suthep?
Songthaew from near Chang Phueak Gate or Maya, a Grab, a rented scooter if you're a confident rider, or a private car. The road is steep and winding, so if you're new to riding here, take a red truck instead.
Is there an entrance fee for Chiang Mai temples?
Most Old City temples charge a small fee for foreign visitors, typically 20–50 THB, and some charge nothing. Doi Suthep has a modest entrance charge plus the funicular if you'd rather not climb the naga staircase.
